Dolby Atmos uses special mixing techniques to layer independent “sound objects” on top of a standard multi-channel set-up. The Onkyo HT-S9800THX has seven HDMI inputs for connecting digital audio and video sources. There is also a digital coaxial and two optical connections for interfacing additional audio sources. I'd say the 9400 has bigger speakers, which might be a good thing. This might be useful depending on how you want to set the all thing up. Now, some say that within the 800$-1000$ range you could pick the same amps (608,...) and get separate speakers with better reputation . It's now really up to you and depends on the price you can grab it..... Also, if you want to avoid the hassle of choosing separates elements and so, this kit might fit the bill. I'm upgrading from Sony STR-DN1000 receiver with small Sony speakers.
Checking if the site connection is secure
So to me - the receiver is matched with the wrong speakers, or the speakers are matched with the wrong receiver. I also noticed that my IPOD classic color screen 80 GB did not get recognized when I plug it in the USB port. Does anyone use this older IPOD with the Onkyo 9400? I could not find it stated anywhere that it is not supported. I tried a USB harddrive and I can play the music from that just fine. I went on the Onkyo website to compare both models.
I can turn it as high as 75 and it doesn't sound too loud. I am not sure if I have the setup the speakers right. I connected my USB player and it sounded a lot louder .

You can also connect high-resolution audio sources to the receiver’s rear-panel USB port. My old onkyo 5.1 setup is actually 100w RMS per channel, which does make a difference . In effect my 2005 low tech onkyo receiver has more power to drive the speakers than the included receiver. Also the HT-S580 system's speakers are ported plastic enclosures - very loud for what they are. Honestly the quality is high enough you don't hear the distortion you'd expect from lesser systems (sometimes can mistaken for being 'louder').

My uncle has the 9100THX and my step-bro has the 9300THX as per my recommendation for them to buy them. That system is hands down the best HTiB all from one company on the market. My relatives both bought refurb units for like $650 and love them, and for 7 THX speakers, 1 THX sub and a THX receiver $650 is a steal. The features of the receivers are nice, they support 3D and have DTS HD MA and Dolby TrueHD and it has Audyssey room correction software I think it only has 2EQ which is the lowest version but still better than nothing.... Also don't really pay attention to the freq resp listed for the speakers and sub.

I just can't find any recessed speaker plates or attached mounting fasteners. I'm reading that they are heavier, which I like, but don't want to choose the wrong angled wall mounts. After reading posts in the forum, I have decided to go with discrete setup. I do own a HT-S9100 THX which is the "grandfather" of the 9400.
I just did it that way because its what I like.... The HT-S9400THX offers full 4K upscaling of standard video sources such as 480i/p, 720p, and 1080i/p. Interlaced-to-progressive conversion and scaling are performed by high-quality Qdeo technology from Marvell.
